Sergey Kiryuschenko

Sergey Kiryuschenko in Mochnarte Residency. Artist, painter, co-director of the KALEKTAR platform. Member of the art group "Nemiga-17". Lives and works in Minsk.

The works of Sergei Kiryushchenko have not ceased to attract attention for forty years now, and every five to seven years the artist manages to transform the vector of his activity. He identifies himself as a painter, but nevertheless he constantly turns to the possibilities of other media: sculpture and silk-screen printing, photography and video, land art and public art experiments, neon art and working with text. From expressive-realistic post-Cubist landscape painting, Kiryushchenko went into non-figurative abstractionism, then returned to figurative art through the study of archaism and again turned to abstractionism through the synthesis of land art and conceptual art techniques.

The most studied and characteristic element of his abstract works is the lattice figure - a symbol in abstract painting of the rejection of literary and originality, where the figure blocks literary interpretations of the pictorial space and emphasizes the plane of the pictorial surface. Kiryushchenko, on the other hand, uses the grid just to demonstrate the depth and optical “destruction” of the surface of the canvas, a gap, including a speculative and verbal one.
