Since three years, Rozalina Busel is preoccupied with the project "Borders and Restrictions". The visual concept of the project takes its roots in comparison of the state border symbolism and burial rituals. The old life is buried forever while the new one requires to cross the borders, overcome obstacles created by the society and live with fears of uncertainty.
In the project “Borders and Restrictions”, Razalina Busel interprets the symbols of funeral and mourning, euphemisms and metaphors of death, epitaphs. The image of the coffin shape refers to the author’s childhood when she used found clay to make a coffin for a large, bright green and dead grasshopper. This coffin was not burned and after burial, it merged with the ground. Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
The realistic game included awareness of the mortality factor of a living being and a moment of consolation after the funeral and farewell ritual. This consolation became necessary for the artist after six months of being in exile and the realization that returning home was impossible for an indefinite period. And the author returned to creating coffins objects.
Each work of the project uses material that has its symbolic meaning. For example, in 'White Palisade', the image of an idealistic life is conveyed through noble but fragile porcelain. In 'Ritual Burning', highly flammable cardboard refers to the migration crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, which entails victims.
The work 'Never Ending Puzzle', realized during a residence in Mohnarte in October 2023, includes exploration of the area in search of local 'wild' clay, making small coffins-bricks, creating an archaic pit-firing on the territory of the Foundation. On the day of the presentation, guests had the opportunity to take part in excavations and searches for still-warm firing coffins among the ashes and earth. Thus, they became involved in the process of transforming a natural fossil into an object and overcame some borders.
