CLINTON’S BENCH
MOCHNARTE ART RESIDENCY
The Mochnarte Foundation, with the support of The German Marshall Fund of the United States, within the framework of Uladzimir Hramovich’s project “Clinton’s Bench.”
Mochnarte announces an open call for two artists who will be invited to take part in an art residency in Podlasie (Poland) in 2026.
The residency is part of the artistic and research-based project “Clinton’s Bench,” initiated by artist and curator Uladzimir Hramovich.
The project unfolds around the history of a destroyed monument installed in 1994 in Kurapaty by U.S. President Bill Clinton in memory of and in tribute to the victims of Soviet repression. Today, a concrete block stands in its place — a marker of suppressed memory and a symbol of ongoing political repression.
The new installation at Mochnarte explores the transformation of the monument and its re-reading as an independent statement, in which the title and material create a conceptual tension — a discrepancy between meaning and object. This tension reflects the ruptures in Belarusian historical memory caused by long-term mechanisms of control and the erosion of meaning.
Who we invite:
Artists working in various media, including installation, video, audio, performance, text, research-based projects, archival practices, media art, and more.
Key criteria:
• Interest in themes of memory, Belarus, and repression
• Willingness to engage in dialogue with the project’s concept
What the residency offers:
• A dedicated workspace
• Full curatorial support
• Participation in a public program (presentations, discussions)
• Presentation of the work in May 2026
• Possibility of further exhibitions
• Coverage of necessary expenses (artist fee for project realization: 2,500 PLN, plus two weeks of paid accommodation at the residency)
Timeline:
• Residency: March–May 2026
• Public presentation: May 2026
• Application deadline: January 31, 2026
What to submit:
• Short motivation letter
• Portfolio / link
• Short biography
