The foundation is based in the village of Mochnate, from which it got its name. Located close to the border with Belarus, near Białowieża primary forest, this area has been on the border for many centuries of its history, and at different times was defined as a part of different state entities. It was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Prussian Kingdom, the Russian Empire and again back to Poland. During the first World War the region suffered from massive exodus of its population. The second World War brought German and Soviet occupations.

This region has long been inhabited by the Belarusian minority, where people speak "in their own way" and cultivate their specific ethnic and cultural tradition. This place is once again on the border between east and west, where forests are being cut down, new fences are being built, but also new connections are being made.  MOCHNARTE Foundation makes its task to invent and develop these new connections at the point of their rupture. By inviting artists, curators, creative workers which were forced to leave their homes and countries, MOCHNARTE offers them a place for reflection, conversations, rest and work.

The Foundation was established to achieve socially useful goals by conducting public benefit activities in the following areas

To support artists and curators active in contemporary visual arts and being restricted in their activities by political regimes or wars;

The foundation is open mainly to artists in exile but also supports local artists from Podlasie region;

Mochnarte is open to any cooperation with artists focused on themes of primal forest and related social topics.

MOCHNARTE promotes non discrimination policy and treats all artists equally regardless of race, national origin, native language, citizenship, religion, age, disability, marital status, sex, gender identification and sexual orientation.
The architectural complex at the family property of Walenty Sielwiesiuk, the founder of the Mochnarte Foundation, consists of several houses in tradition of local wooden architecture with its specific ornamental design.

MOCHNARTE offers access to the collection of contemporary art of the founder and is open for cooperation with other institutions.
