A strategic planning meeting of the KUT Foundation team from Poznan took place in Mochnarte. The aim was to develop a plan for the year, to define/discuss the values of the organisation and everyone's role and contribution to its development. The KUT is dedicated to the promotion of culture and art and organises events to popularise cultural, artistic and experimental projects.

Ilya Sprindzuk conducted a photo session in the Bialowieza forest exposing a large scale image of an eye in a white snowy woodland. 
The project refers to the relationship of being visible and being under observation, where the viewer and the artwork swap the roles of the observer and the onlooker.

Olga Klip, Belarusian art critic and gallerist currently in exile, took the opportunity to stay at Mochnarte to work on her projects away from the restrictions and pressures of everyday life.




FEBRUARY


We held an open call for artists' residencies in 2024. We received applications from artists living in countries as diverse as Germany, Holland, Ukraine, Georgia, Canada and Poland.  Most of the applications were positively assessed.

Mochnarte supported the applicants in their efforts to obtain travel grants.

Ilya Sprindzuk and Sasha Velichko made a photo session in Mochnate with one of "Giants" created by Sprindzuk at Mochnarte in the fall of last year. The "Giant" after travelling around Mochnate village on a cart powered by ancient "Belarus" tractor found his place at Mochnarte Giardini.

Tasha Katsuba spent a week at Mochnarte finishing her project "The Diary of Tears". An intimate art talk meeting with the artist finalized her stay. Among the attendants was Dorota Jareck, the director of STUDIO Gallery (Warsaw).

The guest of the residence, Eva Falter, was involved in the adaptation of the design of the Mochnarte Foundation.  




APRIL

Yauhen Hlushan created his installation "Safaty Place" in Mochnarte. Sixteen white transparent flags were placed regularly on a 17 square metre rectangle in the middle of a green meadow. The installation was photographed by its author with a lens camera during day and night. It remained in place for three days and was also filmed by local television.

Later, Yauhen Hlushan decided to reinstall the white flag composition near the Polish border wall in the Bialowieza Forest in the Czoło Nature Reserve. The necessary authorisation was obtain from the Białowieża National Park authorities and local Border Guard post. The installation was in place only for two hours just enough for photo session done by the artist and his companion Rozalina Busel.

A group of young curators Curatorial group 4 completed their almost year-long project on exhibition design. During their three residencies at Mochnarte, they explored different aspects of life in the border zone. In the end, they came up with an exhibition concept focusing on the wall built by the Polish authorities along the border with Belarus to stop the flow of illegal immigration. The group exhibition will explore various aspects of this theme.

Rozalina Busel brought her ceramic sculpture "Border Zone I" to Mochnarte. It is a real size replica of a border pole, which protects itself with rose-like thorns. The object was placed on the top of a hill overlooking the village's fields.

Nadya Sayapina came to Mochnarte to shoot her video project "Pokuć". The artist with assistance of Eugene Buldyk created a corner-like frame with a mirror. It was then placed in a forest clearing for filming. The proximity of the Bielawieza Forest to the Belarusian border played an important emotional role for the artist and symbolic meaning for the created video.

As a result, a short video was produced and presented at the Warsaw gallery "Marszałkowska 18".

Lena Davidovich spent 12 days in Mochnarte in search of the ‘Listen to me, you islands!’ project . After familiarising herself with the local visual culture and researching the history of Podlasie, she created a polychromy in the premises of Mochnarte. The Amsterdam-based artist also gave a presentation of her previous projects to the Mochnarte community.

Yulia Tsviatkova came to Mochnarte to develop her project "In the skin of an animal". She is a young Belarusian artist currently studying at the Bremen Art School. Yulia spent a week in Mochnarte taking pictures and recording sounds of the forest and fields for her project. She also visited the Tatar cemetery in Bohoniki, where she found the graves of Muslim illegal immigrants, and the Czoło nature reserve.

Ilya Sprindzuk directed the creation of a 3 metre high concrete sculptural installation on the territory of Mochnarte. The concrete block is pierced with bundles of optical cables. It is intended to be the artist's diploma work entitled 'Рунь'/ Sward at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.

The artist Georgy Litichevsky came to the Residence for a few days.
The Ukrainian-born artist was a leading figure of the Moscow avant-garde art in the 80s.  He now lives in Germany. His works are held in collections of Center G.Pompidou in Paris, Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Thessaloniki Museum of Moder Art and Mochnarte.

Nadya Saypina showed for the first time her video project "Kut" partially produced at Mochnarte. Mochnarte participated at the opening of her solo show at Marszalkowska 19 Gallery in Warsaw.




AUGUST

Masha Shukan, a young artist and model from Belarus living currently in Warsaw organized an artistic DJ party at Mochnarte residence. Masha's works were displayed in our garden. The party was attended, among others, by Uladzimir Hramovich, Lesia Pcholka and Jana Shostak.

Jura Shust paid a short visit to Mochnarte. While trekking in the wilderness of our Bialowieza primary forest, he picked up several dead spruce trunks. They were later on shipped to Berlin and eventually were used by the artist to produce sculptural installation presented at Paris International 2024 art fair.

Hleb Burnasheu, a young Belarusian exile artist visited Mochnarte for a two-day photo session. Some of his works were later added to Mochnarte collection.

Zmicier Zhaunou had a week-long residence at Mochnarte. He worked on a specific project called Borderland (Pamezhzha) which is based on traditional painting technique. The artist invents bizarre creatures, a mixture of animals and humans, by which he ironically comments political and social environment. His residence was finalized by a presentation of his project to Mochnarte friends circle.

At some point during his residence, Zmicier was joined by a young Ukrainian artist Terra Neidorf.

During her Mochnarte residence Terra made a series of land sculptures. Wire structures covered with clay resembled snowman were placed in the natural environment. 

It was always interesting to watch the dialogue between Terra and Zmicier, while each of them spoke their own language (Ukrainian and Balarus) but they understtod perfectly each other. Immediately, the idea came about Mochnarte being a platform for conversation between Belarussian and Ukrainian artists.

During the Warsaw Gallery Weekend Mochnarte throwed a party for artists and art lovers. In a rented space just in front of the Warsaw Royal Castle we had pleasure to host among others Serhei Shabohin, Rozalina Busel, Zhenia Hlushan, Nikita Kadan, Stefan and Joanna Ficner.

During the whole month of October Mochnarte residence hosted Sergey Kirushchenko, a rare visitor from Minsk. Sergey Kirtushchenko is an emblematic figure of belarussian contemporary art.

Being a leading representative of Belarus abstract art, Kirushchenko is also an important figure for the younger generation of artists. His famous atelier at Nemiha Street was a gathering place for such Minsk artists as Sergey Shabohin, Alexei Lunev and Uladzimir Hramovich. Therefore they came to join their master in our village.

During a month long stay Kirushchenko created a painting from his series: xxxx, which eventually enriched the Mochnarte collection.

Alexey Lunev and Sergey Shabohin prepared a new joint work entitled TITLE PAGES in which they addressed Belarusian literature, textbooks, books – dissecting and changing their covers to emancipate the images with a new meaning.

The results of the residential stay were exhibited at the Mochnarte hall for the view of our most loyal public.

The event was also joined by Lesia Pcholka and Uladzimir Hramovich who at the same time had a one day exhibition in Bialystok at Zenit Club in frame of Spolem project curated by Tomek Pawlowski-Jermolajew. The installation of Lesia Pcholka presented there was earlier created at Mochnarte.



The event attracted also Olga Mzhelskaya, belarussian cultural manager based in Warsaw. Olga is well known mainly by her art focused media channel "Little Hedonist", where she also presented a video on Mochnarte which was shoot during her visit.

The Tutaka foundation's activities are aimed at promoting Belarusian culture, also in its regional issue - Podlasie.



The year is ended by a residence of Podlasie born artist Katarzyna Sienkiewicz. She is an intermedia visual artist exploring the connections between painting and traditional weaving. In painting, various weaving techniques are created, mainly using encaustic. One of such paintings presented at Vehaexhibition in Gorzów Wielkopolski and Copenhagen was added to Mochnarte collection.

Kasia also writes poetry in the Belarusian language. During her stay she developed a concept of presentation of her verses by calligraphic means originating from local traditional embroidery used to decorate the ritual towels (ruchniki).
